Replacement brake band tension knob - for Ashford Spinning Wheels with Scotch Tension, generally made after about 1975.
Also used on Double Drive wheels when used in single drive mode
Will this fit my wheel? Place a normal pencil in the hole... now measure the amount of sideways movement at the end of the pencil..
Moves around 10mm+, then this is probably the one for your wheel. Only moves around 5mm, then you probably need the older style which has a thinner shaft. - a different item...
We generally find if this knob is missing, so is the spring and brakeband hence initially we offer this knob as a set of knob, two springs and nylon brakeband.
How to fit it? Generally the knob will be at the front right of the maiden bar (Not here? - you probably need the slimmer knob) The nylon is tied to the spring which will attach to the open screw hook (rear left), thread the nylon through the closed screw eye (rear right) through the hole in the tension knob and put a knot in the end to stop it slipping out of the knob, place the knob in the hole and turning the knob, wind the nylon around the knob until the spring JUST starts to expand. The nylon goes up and over the bobbin, sitting in the groove at the end of the bobbin. This will be a great start point for tension.
If the hole for the knob is at the rear left, generally you will need the older model knob ... again, use the pencil test to determine.
